Chicory fiber snack bars and their effects on gut bacteria in people who eat little fiber

Updated

Abstract

Moderate-dose fiber snack bars increased the Bifidobacterium genus from 5.3% to 18.7% in healthy adults.

  • The moderate-dose group showed significant changes in multiple microbial taxa compared to the control group.
  • Low-dose fiber intake did not result in significant increases in Bifidobacterium after adjusting for multiple comparisons, although targeted analysis indicated a significant rise.
  • Predictive functional profiling revealed changes in gut microbiota functionality after consuming moderate-dose bars, but not with low-dose bars.
  • Fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) varied over time but were not influenced by fiber treatment.
  • There were no significant differences in gastrointestinal symptoms between the treatment groups.
  • Overall fiber intake significantly increased with both moderate and low-dose fiber bars.
