How Children's Schooling Methods During COVID-19 Relate to Their and Their Parents' Experiences and Well-Being

Updated

Abstract

Among 1,290 surveyed parents, 45.7% reported their child received virtual instruction during the pandemic.

  • Children receiving virtual or combined instruction exhibited worse indicators of mental health and physical activity compared to those receiving in-person instruction.
  • Parents of children in virtual or combined instruction reported higher levels of emotional distress.
  • The shift to virtual education may increase risks for negative health outcomes in both children and parents.
  • Additional support may be necessary for families affected by the pandemic's impact on schooling.
  • Community actions to lower COVID-19 cases and enhance school mitigation strategies are essential for facilitating a return to in-person learning.
