Using Chlorhexidine Baths to Prevent Hospital Infections in Critically Ill Patients

Abstract

A total of 22,935 participants were included in the analysis of chlorhexidine bathing effects on hospital-acquired infections in critically ill patients.

  • The evidence regarding the impact of chlorhexidine bathing on reducing hospital-acquired infections is very low in certainty.
  • Mortality rates associated with chlorhexidine bathing in critically ill patients show very low certainty of evidence for any reduction.
  • No significant difference in ICU length of stay was observed, but certainty of the evidence remains very low.
  • Skin reactions attributed to chlorhexidine bathing were reported, yet data were inconsistent and of very low certainty.
