Timing of tracheostomy (early vs late) in critically ill COVID-19 patients

Updated

Abstract

One randomized controlled trial with 150 participants and 24 non-randomized studies involving 6372 participants were analyzed to evaluate early tracheostomy in critically ill COVID-19 patients.

  • Early tracheostomy may result in little to no difference in overall mortality compared to late tracheostomy.
  • There may be little to no difference in the duration to liberation from invasive mechanical ventilation with early tracheostomy.
  • The incidence of adverse events and ventilator-associated pneumonia may not differ significantly between early and late tracheostomy.
  • Early tracheostomy could result in little benefit to no difference in ICU length of stay.
  • Certainty of evidence regarding these outcomes is categorized as low or very low, indicating uncertainty in the findings.
