Changes in the brain's fluid-producing tissue in long COVID linked to IL-6 levels

Abstract

Long COVID individuals exhibited a smaller choroid plexus volume compared to COVID-19 survivors and healthy controls.

  • Higher depression scores (MADRS) and lower cognitive scores (MoCA) were observed in long COVID individuals compared to other groups.
  • A significant correlation exists between larger choroid plexus volume and higher interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in long COVID individuals.
  • No significant changes in choroid plexus volume were noted over time in the long COVID group or healthy controls transitioning to COVID-19 survivors.
  • COVID-19 survivors showed an increase in choroid plexus volume from baseline to follow-up assessments.
  • The findings suggest ongoing blood-cerebrospinal fluid barrier dysfunction and epithelial stress in long COVID individuals.
