Long-Term Senolytic Treatment and Aerobic Exercise Reduce Cell Aging and Improve Heart Function in Older Adults

Updated

Abstract

Chronic treatment with senolytics or aerobic exercise significantly lowered the proportion of senescent cardiomyocytes and interstitial cells in aged mice.

  • Both senolytics and aerobic exercise improved myocardial performance and diastolic function compared to naturally aged mice.
  • The proportion of senescent cells marked by p16, p21, and γ-H2AX decreased after 9 months of treatment.
  • Increased protein expression of p16 and p21 was observed with aging, but interventions did not alter this alongside the senescence-associated secretory phenotype.
  • These findings suggest that long-term exercise or senolytics may reduce cellular senescence in the heart.
