Relationship between sleep-wake preference and walking difficulty while multitasking across different thinking skills in healthy young adults

Abstract

Chronotype predicts dual-task gait cost in specific cognitive tasks, with greater morningness linked to better gait-speed preservation.

  • Sixty-nine healthy young adults participated in assessments of circadian preference using the Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ).
  • The largest mean velocity dual-task gait cost occurred during the serial subtraction by seven task, at -12.76%.
  • A significant independent association was found between MEQ score and mean velocity dual-task gait cost in phonological and sequential tasks.
  • Greater morningness was linked to improved gait-speed preservation during backward word spelling and reverse month recitation tasks.
  • The arithmetic dual-task condition showed the highest interference but the weakest association with chronotype.
  • Exploratory correlations revealed MEQ-DTC associations across multiple gait parameters, with varying strength depending on the task.
