Cigarette smoking, e-cigarette use, and their links to Long COVID in the general population

Updated

Abstract

7.4% of adults reported Long COVID symptoms lasting more than four weeks after infection.

  • Former cigarette smokers currently using neither product may have a 40% higher adjusted odds of reporting Long COVID compared to never users.
  • Former smokers who exclusively use e-cigarettes could have a 56% higher adjusted odds of Long COVID than never users.
  • No significant associations were found for former e-cigarette users who had never smoked, current e-cigarette users who had never smoked, exclusive current cigarette smokers, or dual users.
  • Elevated associations persisted even after adjusting for other health conditions like asthma and diabetes.
  • The findings may reflect factors such as past smoking exposure or health-related changes in smoking behavior.
