Body Clock Melatonin and Temperature Timing in Patients with Delayed Sleep Phase and Non-24-Hour Sleep Disorders

Updated

Abstract

DSWPD patients exhibited significantly longer melatonin rhythm taus of 24 h 34 min compared to control participants' 24 h 22 min.

  • Circadian rhythms in DSWPD patients were measured during an 80-hour ultradian constant routine.
  • Temperature rhythm taus in DSWPD patients averaged 24 h 34 min, longer than controls at 24 h 13 min.
  • N24SWD patients showed the longest melatonin and temperature rhythm taus, at 25 h and 24 h 52 min, respectively.
  • Between 12% and 19% of the variance in sleep timing for DSWPD patients could be attributed to longer rhythm taus.
  • These findings suggest that longer taus in circadian rhythms may be linked to treatment resistance in DSWPD.
