Effects of Body Clock Disruption on Salivary Glands in Young and Older Adults

Circadian disruption significantly affected the expression of key salivary markers, including amylase and mucins, in young and aged mice.

  • Salivary volume, electrolyte levels, and protein composition exhibit 24-hour fluctuations, indicating regulation by the circadian clock.
  • Limited effects on stimulated salivary secretion and salivary gland structure were observed despite circadian dysregulation.
  • Increased production of amylase and acidic mucins was noted in several knockout mouse models targeting circadian clock genes.
  • Circadian disruption led to subtle changes in the salivary immune environment, including increased lymphocyte infiltration and higher levels of proinflammatory cytokines.
  • These immune alterations were more prominent in aged salivary glands, particularly in specific knockout models.
