Propofol may disturb the daily rhythm of body temperature

Abstract

Propofol administration resulted in a significant shortening of the circadian period by 96 and 180 min at specific times of day in rats.

  • Desynchronization of the circadian time structure can occur due to specific drug intake.
  • Rats experienced a significant phase advance of body temperature rhythm of 60-80 min after propofol administration.
  • No changes in the circadian period were observed in control rats injected with a lipidic solution.
  • Propofol shortened the circadian period at ZT6 and ZT10, while lengthening it by 90 min at ZT16.
  • The speed of readjustment to the original 24-hour body temperature rhythm was quicker at ZT16 compared to earlier times.
