Changes in daily body clock timing in high school students between weekdays and weekends and how it relates to their sleep patterns

Abstract

In a sample of 95 high-school students, circadian phase substantially shifted from school nights to weekend nights.

  • Sleep characteristics, including dim light melatonin onset (DLMO), showed significant differences between weekdays and weekends.
  • Later mean DLMO was associated with larger increases in total sleep time over the weekend.
  • Self-reported measures of circadian timing had weak correlations with biological measures of circadian phase.
  • Teens with later circadian phases tended to catch up on sleep more significantly during weekends.
