The daily rhythm protein BMAL1 in immune cells may reduce allergic asthma

Abstract

Mice lacking the BMAL1 gene in myeloid cells exhibited markedly increased asthma features, including higher lung inflammation.

  • Increased numbers of eosinophils and elevated IL-5 levels were observed in the lungs and serum of BMAL1-LysM mice.
  • Proinflammatory chemokine and mannose receptor expression were higher in macrophages from BMAL1-LysM mice compared to wild-type controls.
  • BMAL1 may function as a negative regulator in myeloid cells related to allergic asthma.
  • The findings could help explain the higher incidence of asthma attacks at night, correlating with low BMAL1 expression.
