Comparing Skin Temperature and Movement to Track Daily Body Rhythms in Different Sleep Conditions Outdoors

In a study with 17 healthy participants, skin temperature monitoring demonstrated better fit for estimating circadian rhythm parameters than activity-based data.

  • Cosinor models fitted better on skin temperature data compared to activity data.
  • Sleep restriction for three consecutive nights led to reduced amplitude and delayed acrophase in activity rhythms.
  • Skin temperature rhythm exhibited a decreased distal temperature amplitude during sleep restriction.
  • No significant correlation was found between rhythm parameters derived from skin temperature and activity data.
  • Skin temperature monitoring shows potential for effective circadian rhythm estimation in field studies after only three days.
