Clevidipine for treating sudden high blood pressure

Updated

Abstract

Clevidipine achieved target systolic blood pressure in 88.9% of patients within 30 minutes of treatment for acute hypertension.

  • Intravenous clevidipine effectively reduced systolic blood pressure by more than 15% from baseline in less than 6 minutes.
  • Clevidipine maintained systolic blood pressure within target limits more effectively than both nitroglycerin and sodium nitroprusside during the perioperative period.
  • In a noncomparative study, clevidipine was effective for lowering blood pressure in adults with acute severe hypertension.
  • The drug was generally well tolerated, with an incidence of adverse events similar to that of traditional treatments like nitroglycerin and sodium nitroprusside.
  • Most patients transitioned successfully to oral antihypertensive therapy after intravenous clevidipine treatment lasting at least 18 hours.
