Clinical and biological factors linked to response to psychedelics in treating mental health and addiction disorders

Updated

Abstract

The intensity of the acute psychedelic experience is the main predictive factor of response in 20 studies reviewed on psychiatric and addictive disorders.

  • Higher intensity of the psychedelic experience is associated with better responses in alcohol and tobacco use disorders, treatment-resistant depression, and anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with life-threatening cancer.
  • No predictive relationship was found between the intensity of the psychedelic experience and response in obsessive-compulsive disorder.
  • Potential mechanisms for the observed effects include modulation of serotonin receptors, changes in brain network activity, and anti-inflammatory effects.
