Updated

Abstract

A total of 3709 SLE patients with infections were compared to 10,526 SLE patients without infections.

  • Infected SLE patients had a significantly higher incidence of lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, anemia, and hypoproteinemia.
  • Diabetes mellitus and renal involvement were also more common in infected SLE patients.
  • Higher levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) and urinary protein were observed in infected SLE patients.
  • High-dose glucocorticoids and immunosuppressants increased susceptibility to infection in SLE patients.
  • Antimalarial drug use was associated with a lower risk of infection among SLE patients.
