Clinical improvement and changes in gut bacteria after six months of multi-strain synbiotic use in Mexican children with autism

Updated

Abstract

Twenty-five children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) completed six months of multi-strain synbiotic supplementation.

  • ASD severity decreased, as indicated by a reduction in total Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) scores and improvements in several CARS domains.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms also significantly decreased during the study period.
  • Longitudinal microbiome profiling showed significant changes in gut microbial composition and diversity over the supplementation period.
  • Whole metagenome sequencing identified alterations in microbial metabolic potential, including an increase in tryptophan biosynthesis pathways and a decrease in L-rhamnose degradation.
