Clinical and metabolic differences between continuous and intermittent tube feeding in ventilated adults with shock

Updated

Abstract

A total of 174 critically ill patients will be enrolled to evaluate the effects of intermittent versus continuous enteral nutrition.

  • Intermittent enteral nutrition may activate protective metabolic pathways by mimicking fasting.
  • Continuous enteral nutrition could inhibit processes such as autophagy and ketogenesis.
  • The primary outcome measures changes in the Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) score over 7 days.
  • Secondary outcomes include nutritional intake, metabolic markers, gastrointestinal tolerance, and infection rates.
  • Quality of life will be assessed at the time of discharge.
