Activation of a Gut Gene Helps Ziziphus jujuba Alcohol Extract Protect Sleep Through the Gut-Brain Link in Fruit Flies

Updated

Abstract

Ziziphus jujuba alcohol extract (ZJAE) restored total sleep time in chronic sleep-deprived Drosophila.

  • ZJAE reduced motor hyperactivity and systemic oxidative stress.
  • Intestinal barrier function was restored following ZJAE treatment.
  • Acetobacter, a type of beneficial bacteria, was enriched in treated flies.
  • The highest expression of the antioxidant gene CncC occurred in flies treated with ZJAE and colonized with acetic acid bacteria.
  • Knockdown of the CncC gene in intestinal cells negated improvements in sleep and oxidative stress.
