Gut bacteria imbalance and bile acid changes linked to mental health problems in Crohn's disease

Updated

Abstract

Significant reductions in the secondary bile acids LCA and DCA were found in both feces and serum samples of Crohn's disease patients.

  • The concentration of 7-DHCA was higher in the serum of Crohn's disease patients who had psychological disorders.
  • Fecal levels of HDCA and 12-DHCA were inversely correlated with self-reported depression scores.
  • Serum levels of 7-DHCA were positively correlated with self-reported depression scores.
  • Fecal levels of TDCA, TLCA, and TβMCA showed a positive correlation with self-reported anxiety scores.
  • Biodiversity of fecal microbiota was found to be significantly lower in Crohn's disease patients with psychological disorders.
  • An increase in Ruminococcus gnavus in Crohn's disease patients may affect the gut barrier and contribute to psychological disorders.
