Participants with neurologic post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (Neuro-PASC) exhibited reduced blood monocytes and increased mitochondrial superoxide.

  • Altered mitochondrial function in monocytes is present in individuals with Neuro-PASC.
  • Higher peripheral capillary oxygen saturation (SpO2) correlates with improved processing speed in Neuro-PASC participants.
  • In individuals without Neuro-PASC, cognitive performance is linked to the mitochondrial ATP synthase/Complex V pathway, which does not hold true for those with Neuro-PASC.
  • A 13-gene monocyte anchor is identified, representing a cognition-associated phenotype in Neuro-PASC.
  • Coordination of oxidative phosphorylation and cytotoxic programs across T-cell subsets is disrupted in Neuro-PASC participants.
