Better Kidney Health from Combining GLP-1 Receptor Agonists and SGLT2 Inhibitors Compared to Using One Alone

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Combined GLP-1 receptor agonist and SGLT2 inhibitor therapy was associated with better albuminuria reduction than monotherapy in adults with type 2 diabetes.

Evidence

This systematic review and random-effects meta-analysis included eight randomized controlled trials with 1,974 adults with T2D, comparing GLP-1RA plus SGLT2i against monotherapy or placebo for UACR and eGFR outcomes.

Caveat

The UACR benefit remained significant versus SGLT2i alone but not versus GLP-1RA alone, and eGFR gains were modest and comparator-dependent.
