Best timing to start epidural pain relief after spinal injection during labor

Updated

Abstract

In a study of 144 laboring women, initiating epidural infusion within 30 minutes of spinal induction significantly reduced the need for additional analgesia.

  • Patients receiving epidural infusion at 3 and 30 minutes after spinal induction required fewer additional doses of ropivacaine compared to those starting at 60 and 90 minutes.
  • The total amount of ropivacaine used by patients in the 3 and 30-minute groups was slightly lower than in the 60 and 90-minute groups, though this difference was not statistically significant.
  • The findings indicate that starting epidural infusion soon after spinal administration may improve pain management during labor.
