Community actions and methods to control tooth decay in Latin America and the Caribbean

Updated

Abstract

Twenty-six out of 37 identified publications focused on fluoride use for caries control in Latin American and Caribbean countries.

  • Community interventions to restrict sugar consumption are limited and primarily involve food supplementation, sugar replacement, and education.
  • Fluoride-based strategies include drinking water, refined domestic salt, cow milk, and toothpaste to deliver fluoride to the population.
  • Evidence of fluoride use was reported in multiple countries, including Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico.
  • Studies on occlusal sealants were mainly conducted in Brazil, Chile, and Colombia.
  • Monitoring fluoride use is necessary to maximize its anti-caries effect while reducing the risk of dental fluorosis.
  • Culturally appropriate and economically sustainable caries control interventions are essential for rural and indigenous populations.
