How Life's Essential 8 and Life's Simple 7 relate to depression and the possible role of oxidative stress and inflammation

Updated

Abstract

Individuals with extremely poor cardiovascular health have a 7-fold increased risk of depression.

  • Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is associated with a significant reduction in depression risk, with a 52% decrease for moderate cardiovascular health (CVH) and an 80% decrease for high CVH compared to low CVH.
  • Life's Simple 7 (LS7) also shows a significant association with depression, with a 49% decrease for average CVH and a 55% decrease for optimal CVH compared to inadequate CVH.
  • The area under the curve for LE8 predicting depression is 0.672, indicating a stronger predictive ability compared to LS7, which has an area of 0.605.
  • Oxidative stress and inflammation may mediate the association between cardiovascular health and depression, with specific factors mediating 9.62% of this relationship.
  • The findings are based on cross-sectional data, which limits the ability to determine causality.
