Comparing how two heart health scores relate to stroke risk: NHANES 1999-2018

Updated

Abstract

Moderate cardiovascular health (CVH) associated with Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is linked to a 41% lower risk of stroke compared to low CVH.

  • High CVH associated with LE8 linked to a 71% lower prevalence of stroke compared to low CVH.
  • Average CVH associated with Life's Simple 7 (LS7) linked to a 24% lower prevalence of stroke compared to inadequate CVH.
  • Optimal CVH associated with LS7 linked to a 39% lower prevalence of stroke compared to inadequate CVH.
  • LE8 demonstrated a stronger ability to predict stroke than LS7, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.702 versus 0.677.
  • Oxidative stress and inflammation may mediate the association between LE8 and stroke.
  • Neither LE8 nor LS7 were predictive of mortality risk in stroke survivors.
