How stigma differs for people using Ozempic, weight-loss surgery, or behavior changes

Updated

Abstract

A sample of 297 participants revealed that individuals viewed a woman more negatively if she lost weight using the drug Ozempic compared to diet and exercise alone.

  • Perceptions of a person can differ based on their weight loss method, specifically showing bias against those using weight loss drugs.
  • Participants did not perceive significant differences in attitudes towards a person who lost weight through bariatric surgery versus other methods.
  • Many participants underestimated the prevalence of weight regain and misjudged the effectiveness of various weight management strategies.
  • The findings indicate a potential need for better public health information regarding body weight and weight loss methods.
