How Weight-Loss Drugs and Surgery Relate to Support for Obesity Policies

Updated

Abstract

Exposure to a weight loss intervention using GLP-1 or bariatric surgery increased policy support for GLP-1 coverage among 440 participants.

  • Participants reported greater support for GLP-1 policy after reading about a woman who lost weight with GLP-1 or bariatric surgery compared to diet/exercise.
  • Exposure to medical weight loss interventions was linked to beliefs that these methods represent weight loss 'shortcuts.'
  • Beliefs about shortcuts may indirectly decrease support for GLP-1 policies.
  • The findings suggest that perceptions of medical weight loss methods can influence public and policy attitudes towards obesity treatments.
