How GLP-1 Drugs, Lifestyle Changes, and Weight Control Beliefs Affect Weight Stigma and Thoughts About Weight

Updated

Abstract

Women with overweight and obesity (N = 163) judged a woman who lost weight using a GLP-1 more negatively than one who lost weight through diet/exercise.

  • Exposure to a woman losing weight with a GLP-1 was associated with increased negative judgments due to higher global downward social comparison.
  • Participants reported more maladaptive weight-related thoughts when the weight loss method was diet/exercise compared to GLP-1.
  • Higher weight and body size comparisons were linked to the more favorable perception of losing weight through diet/exercise.
  • Emphasizing uncontrollable weight did not significantly reduce stigma towards GLP-1 users or influence weight-related thoughts.
