Stress changes the immediate and lasting effects of psilocybin differently in males and females

Abstract

Psilocybin (5 mg/kg) significantly increased head-twitch response frequency in female mice compared to males.

  • The head-twitch response frequency was greater in female mice than in male mice after psilocybin administration.
  • Exposure to stress during the acute effects of psilocybin blocked anxiolytic-like behaviors in male mice, while only partially blocking them in female mice.
  • Psilocybin induced anxiolytic-like behaviors but did not show antidepressant-like effects in either sex.
  • Both stress and psilocybin independently increased plasma corticosterone levels, with no additive effects observed.
