  • Well-nourished purple sea urchins in low densities showed strong antipredator responses.
  • In contrast, less nourished urchins from barren habitats did not initially respond to predator cues at high densities.
  • When the density of barren urchins was lowered, they exhibited a strong response to predator cues.
  • Responses of barren urchins to predation risk remained consistent after varying periods of starvation.
  • High densities of urchins in barren habitats may diminish the impact of predation, allowing continued grazing.
