Constipation is linked to a higher risk of depression: A review and combined analysis of studies

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Constipation was associated with a higher risk of depression across observational studies.

Evidence

This systematic review and meta-analysis of 18 observational studies including 730,263 participants found a pooled odds ratio of 2.08 (95% CI 1.84-2.34) for depression in people with constipation.

Caveat

The evidence is observational and highly heterogeneous (I²=92.6%), which limits causal inference and suggests results varied substantially across studies.
