Cost-Effectiveness of Medicine Treatments for Obesity in Teenagers

Updated

Abstract

Simulations of 100,000 adolescents with an initial BMI of 37 found that top-dose phentermine and topiramate could be cost-effective after 5 years.

  • At 13 months and 2 years, lifestyle counseling alone was estimated to be the preferred strategy for managing obesity.
  • After 5 years, top-dose phentermine and topiramate showed an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio of $56,876 per quality-adjusted life year (QALY) gained compared to lifestyle counseling.
  • Semaglutide was projected to provide the highest number of QALYs but had an unfavorable cost-effectiveness ratio of $1.1 million per QALY gained compared to top-dose phentermine and topiramate.
  • The model's results were highly sensitive to factors such as the effectiveness of weight reduction from lifestyle counseling and the top-dose phentermine and topiramate combination.
  • Quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), costs in 2022 US dollars, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were the main outcomes measured.
