Lowering cottonseed gossypol by mutating GhCAD using CRISPR/Cas9

Updated

Abstract

Essence

Editing GhCAD in cotton lowered in seeds while leaving measured seed protein and fatty acid profiles similar to controls.

Evidence

Plant and gene-regulation experiments found about 64% lower gossypol in edited cotton seeds and leaves, about 46% lower seed gossypol with GhCAD1-A editing alone, and GhMYC2-D09 effects on gossypol-related genes.

Caveat

This is genetic-resource and mechanistic plant work, so food or feed performance, field traits, and broader agronomic effects were not tested.
