Gene Editing of Grapevine MLO Genes Linked to Powdery Mildew Resistance and Plant Growth

Updated

Abstract

Loss-of-function mutations in clade V-MLO genes can improve grapevine resistance to powdery mildew.

  • Four clade V-MLO genes, MLO3, MLO4, MLO13, and MLO17, were studied for their roles in susceptibility to grape powdery mildew.
  • MLO17 contributes most significantly to resistance, followed by MLO3 and MLO13.
  • Loss of function of MLO4 results in a modest improvement in resistance when combined with other MLO mutations.
  • Partial presence of the wild-type MLO4 allele in knockout mutants reduces developmental issues while enhancing resistance.
  • Functional redundancy exists between MLO13 and MLO17, suggesting they may compensate for each other's functions.
