Removing IBH1 gene with CRISPR adjusts growth hormone levels and changes plant shape and grain traits in durum wheat

Updated

Abstract

Loss of function of the IBH1 transcription factor in durum wheat resulted in increased plant height and grain size.

  • IBH1 is identified as a negative regulator of brassinosteroid (BR) signaling, which affects cell elongation.
  • Enhanced BR signaling was observed in IBH1 knockout mutants, with increased expression of signaling components BRI1 and BZR1.
  • Metabolic profiling indicated selective changes in BR biosynthesis intermediates rather than an overall increase in BR levels.
  • TdIBH1 mutants showed significant increases in internode elongation, leaf inclination, and thousand grain weight.
  • No significant differences in fertility were found in the IBH1 mutants.
