Dachaihu decoction may improve septic gut injury by changing gut bacteria and antioxidant metabolism

Abstract

The medium dose of Dachaihu decoction (DCH) improved 24-hour mortality in septic intestinal injury (SII) rats.

  • DCH reduced pathological changes in the ileum of SII rats.
  • Expression levels of tight junction protein ZO-1, mucin2 (MUC2), and secretory IgA (sIgA) were increased following DCH treatment.
  • DCH decreased levels of serum diamine oxidase (DAO) and intestinal fatty acid binding protein (iFABP), along with pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in the ileum.
  • DCH improved the diversity and structure of gut microbiota, with a decrease in Escherichia_Shigella and increases in Bacteroides and Ruminococcus.
  • Glutathione (GSH) metabolism was identified as a key pathway influenced by DCH, leading to increased levels of antioxidants and decreased markers of oxidative stress.
