Dance movement therapy for depression

Updated

Abstract

Three studies with a total of 147 participants examined the effects of dance movement therapy (DMT) on depression.

  • No reliable effect of DMT on depression was observed, with a standardized mean difference of -0.67 indicating very low quality evidence.
  • A planned subgroup analysis suggested a positive effect in adults, but it did not reach clinical significance.
  • One study indicated a large positive effect of DMT on social functioning, though the evidence was very low quality.
  • No significant effects were detected for quality of life or self-esteem, with low quality evidence for both measures.
  • The findings highlight the need for larger, higher-quality trials to evaluate DMT's effectiveness for depression across different age groups.
