Using Dawn Light Therapy for People Recovering from Alcoholism with Winter Depression

Updated

Abstract

Mean SIGH-SAD scores decreased from 33.0 to 15.8 after treatment with white dawn simulation in abstinent alcoholics.

  • Six subjects receiving white dawn treatment showed a significant reduction in depression scores compared to those receiving dim red dawn treatment.
  • The mean SIGH-SAD score for the dim red dawn group changed minimally from 34.3 to 32.7.
  • Statistical analysis indicated that the white dawn treatment was superior to the dim red dawn treatment in reducing depression symptoms.
  • Similar results were found using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression, reinforcing the effectiveness of white dawn simulation.
  • The findings suggest that dawn simulation may help alleviate symptoms of seasonal affective disorder in abstinent alcoholics.
