Lack of DEC1 reduces heart damage after blood flow loss through the p53-controlled cell death pathway

DEC1-deficient mice exhibited increased p53 expression and enhanced apoptosis in the infarcted myocardium.

  • Increased apoptosis was observed in the hearts of DEC1-deficient mice after myocardial infarction.
  • Inflammatory cell infiltration was significantly reduced in DEC1-deficient mice compared to wild-type mice.
  • Overall survival after myocardial infarction was improved in DEC1-deficient mice despite heightened apoptosis.
  • Administration of a p53-dependent apoptosis inhibitor attenuated apoptosis in DEC1-deficient mice and abolished survival benefits.
  • Expression of survivin, a protein that inhibits apoptosis, was downregulated in DEC1-deficient hearts following myocardial infarction.
