Self-harm and suicide in people hospitalized for cannabis-related issues in Ontario, Canada

Abstract

Among 11,320,897 individuals, those with a cannabis-related hospital contact had a 5.4-fold increased risk of deliberate self-harm and a 9.2-fold increased risk of death by suicide within 3 years compared to the general population.

  • Individuals with a cannabis-related hospital contact showed a significantly elevated risk of self-harm and suicide.
  • The adjusted hazard ratio for deliberate self-harm was 5.35, and for suicide, it was 9.22.
  • Increased risk of self-harm was observed in individuals with and without co-existing mental health or substance use disorders.
  • Sensitivity analyses indicated a continued increased risk of self-harm even after excluding individuals with co-morbid conditions.
  • In comparison, those with an alcohol-related hospital contact had a higher risk of self-harm relative to those with cannabis-related contacts.
