Delirium in heart ICU patients linked to changeable risk factors

Updated

Abstract

Delirium was observed in 26% of patients in the cardiac surgery ICU.

  • The hypoactive subtype of delirium was present in 92% of patients with delirium.
  • Benzodiazepine use at admission was associated with a three-fold increased risk of developing delirium.
  • Daily administration of benzodiazepines or the use of restraints that limited mobility increased the likelihood of delirium the following day.
  • No association was found between hemodynamic status and the occurrence of delirium.
