Dementia progression and use of GLP-1 receptor drugs in people with mild memory problems and type 2 diabetes

Updated

Abstract

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) are associated with improved cardiovascular, kidney, and mortality outcomes in individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

  • Multiple real-world studies suggest that GLP-1 RAs may reduce the risk of dementia onset in people with T2D.
  • The EVOKE/EVOKE+ randomized-controlled trials found that oral semaglutide did not slow cognitive decline in individuals with early Alzheimer's disease, with 86% of participants not having T2D.
  • It remains unclear if GLP-1 RA therapy could influence the progression to dementia in individuals with both T2D and mild cognitive impairment.
