Changes in Fat Around the Heart and Kidneys with SGLT2 Inhibitors in Chronic Kidney Disease

Updated

Abstract

Among 189 chronic kidney disease patients, SGLT2i therapy was associated with significant reductions in perirenal and epicardial adipose tissue thickness.

  • SGLT2i treatment led to a reduction in perirenal adipose tissue thickness from 1.28 cm to 0.91 cm.
  • A decrease in epicardial adipose tissue thickness was observed, from 0.57 cm to 0.36 cm.
  • No significant changes in adipose tissue thickness were noted in patients not receiving SGLT2i.
  • SGLT2i exposure was independently associated with these reductions after accounting for various factors such as age and BMI.
  • Trends toward improved renal function and reduced systemic inflammation were noted in the SGLT2i group, although not statistically significant.
