Desflurane and Sevoflurane effects on saliva melatonin and sleep problems after knee replacement surgery

Updated

Abstract

Twenty-eight patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty showed no significant difference in salivary melatonin levels between desflurane and sevoflurane anesthesia.

  • Salivary melatonin concentrations were higher at 9:00 p.m. on postoperative days 0 and 1 compared to day 3.
  • Patients receiving desflurane anesthesia reported significantly greater fatigue than those receiving sevoflurane on postoperative day 3.
  • Patients in the sevoflurane group experienced deeper sleep on postoperative day 0 compared to the desflurane group.
  • Sleep duration during the night of postoperative day 2 was longer in the sevoflurane group than on postoperative day 0.
