Identifying and Describing Online Talks About Substance Use Among Gamers on Reddit

Abstract

A total of 10,551 posts were collected from Reddit, with 286 discussing both gaming and substance use.

  • Among the posts discussing substance use, alcohol (n=132), cannabis (n=104), and nicotine (n=48) were the most frequently mentioned.
  • Role-playing games (n=120), shooters (n=90), and multiplayer online battle arenas (n=43) were the most cited gaming genres.
  • Self-reported behaviors aligning with the tentative guidelines for Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) were identified in 66.8% of the relevant posts.
  • Over half of the posts (62.9%) addressed health issues, primarily focusing on mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety.
  • A significant association was found between IGD and substance use, with an odds ratio of 2.29 for those self-reporting substance use.
