Food intake in patients using GLP-1 and GIP/GLP-1 receptor drugs: A review and research gaps

Abstract

Total caloric intake was reduced by 16-39% in individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus using GLP-1 or GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonists.

  • The efficacy of GLP-1 receptor agonists and dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonists for weight reduction and glycemic control is noted.
  • The effects of these medications on dietary intake are not well understood.
  • Few studies assessed the actual composition of the diet in this population.
  • There is a need for further research to determine the nutritional needs of adults on these medications.
