Diet habits of Division I college football players

Updated

Abstract

Dietary practices of 28 NCAA Division I football athletes showed significant inadequacies in energy intake for their activity level (p < 0.05).

  • No differences were found in dietary practices between collegiate football athletes and data from the Third National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES III) for similar ages and gender.
  • Significant inadequacies in energy intake were observed, suggesting athletes may not be consuming enough to meet their activity demands.
  • Fad dieting trends influenced the dietary patterns of the athletes when analyzed against the USDA food guide pyramid.
  • Changes in diet may be necessary to sustain the athletes' activity levels.
