Diet quality and related factors in adults living in São Paulo, Brazil

Abstract

Only 5% of adults in São Paulo had a good diet according to the Healthy Eating Index.

  • Among 3,454 adults, 74% had diets needing improvement, while 21% had poor diets.
  • Dietary quality was lowest for vegetables, fruits, and dairy products.
  • Higher dietary quality is associated with being a nonsmoker, engaging in physical activity, and having adequate living conditions.
  • Positive associations with dietary quality were found for higher income, education level, energy intake, and age.
  • Conversely, higher body mass index and smoking are linked to lower dietary quality.
